Abstract:
In this Thesis we introduced a dynamic Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) framework for coordinated traffic signal optimization along arterial corridors. We chose MILP for its ability to concurrently optimize cycle length, phase sequence, green-time duration, and offset synchronization. We tested the model on a hypothetical three-intersection corridor using the VISSIM micro-simulation tool. For real-world validation, we applied the framework to the Martin Luther King (MLK) Blvd corridor in Chattanooga, Tennessee, through a co-simulation platform. The two sets of simulations revealed improvements in average speed, reductions in Vehicle Hours Traveled (VHT), and decreases in total vehicle stops under various traffic congestion levels. Our comprehensive framework offers potential in applications like enhancing mobility, reducing congestion, and supporting sustainable urban traffic management.
