The following UTC Faculty and Staff have attracted $517,360 in external grant and contract awards:
Dr. Keenan Dungey, Dr. Meredith Barbee, and Dr. Jared Pienkos (Chemistry and Physics) have received $4,800 from the American Chemical Society for the project entitled, “Project SEED site in Chattanooga for 2025.”
Dr. Yingfeng Wang (Computer Science and Engineering) has received $10,800 from a private institution for higher education for a research project.
Dr. Murat Barisik (Mechanical Engineering) has received $501,760 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “CAREER: Multiscale characterization of heat transfer in nanoporous materials assisted by machine learning.”

Dr. Dalei Wu, Dr. Yu Liang, Dr. Yingfeng Wang, Dr. Zihao Wang (Computer Science and Engineering), Dr. Katherine Elverd (Music), and Dr. Zibin Guo (Anthropology, Geography, and Sociology), have requested $149,999 from the AI/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity (AIM-AHEAD) for the project entitled, “Advancing Neurological Rehabilitation through AI-Driven Music Therapy.”
Dr. Zihao Wang and Dr. Shaogang Ren (Computer Science and Engineering) have requested $795,411 from the AI/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity (AIM-AHEAD) for the project entitled, “TrustDiff-MED: Diffusion-Guided Fairness Assurance Medical Imaging AI for Neuro-Oncology.”
Jami Hargrove, Megan McKnight (Center for Wellbeing), and Dr. Yasmine Key (University Health Services) have requested $5,000 from the American College Health Foundation (ACHF) for the project entitled, “American College Health Foundation (ACHF) STI Testing and Prevention Mini Grant.”
Dr. Mina Sartipi and Austin Harris (CUIP), in collaboration with the City of Chattanooga, have requested $862,840 from the US Department of Transportation for the project entitled, “Roadway Safety Design Technology Platform.”
Dr. Rick Mukherjee and Dr. Sarah Chehade (Quantum Center) have requested $16,708 from a federal entity for a research project.
Dr. Erkan Kaplanoglu and Dr. Gazi Akgun (Engineering Management and Technology) have requested $275,000 from the National Institutes of Health for the project entitled, “Design and Testing of Active and Passive Magnetic-Force-Actuated and Gyro Type Wearable Devices for Upper Extremity Essential Tremor.”
Dr. Zihao Wang (Computer Science and Engineering) has requested $496,049 from the National Institutes of Health for the project entitled, “Integrating Probabilistic Learning for Enhanced Inner Ear Structures Under Existing Infrastructure.”
Takeo Suzuki (Center for Global Education) has requested $4,125 from the Institute of International Education for the project entitled, “2025 IIE American Passport Project at UTC.”
Dr. Meredith Barbee (Chemistry and Physics) has requested $120,000 from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement for the project entitled, “2025 Research Corp Cottrell Scholar – Force-triggered unfolding of single-chain nanoparticles in hydrogel networks.”
Sybil Baker (English) has requested $5,000 from the Tennessee Arts Commission for the project entitled, “Southern Literary Festival and Meacham Writers’ Workshop April 2-4, 2026.”
